I have chosen a song to analyse and present my ideas for, which I think would be a good choice to use in our actual production.
[ Snow Patrol - Starfighter Pilot ]
Snow Patrol is a band well known for its often slow and sombre, but empathic and emotive music. Although the band only really became fully successful under the Polydor label with their album Final Straw, their previous two albums, Songs For Polarbears (Polarbear was the band's previous name) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up are both very rich in texture and emotions, sticking to the band's current image.
Starfighter Pilot is fairly upbeat and describes one's admiration of an Andrew, who is apparently a starfighter pilot (probably in a TV series). The lyrics are as such:
"Andrew's a starfighter pilot
He can get high in his jet
Tells me about all his women
He can get any I'll bet
Andrew's a starfighter pilot
He knows all the girls in the world
He's better than James Kirk or Tweeky
I cradle his picture at night
You know I'll think of you
Your picture on the wall
I would raise my drink to you
But I'll stay sober just for you
Andrew's a starfighter pilot
I watch him on TV each day
I've got all the toys from his programme
And all of his past shows on tape"
The good thing about this song in my eyes, is that the instrumentation does not overpower the vocals, and this works in our favour in terms of making a music video since our group is trying to stay away from making a performance video on the basis that it would be too hard to create.
My idea for a video stems from a film which I encountered called The Science of Sleep, which uses very abstract stop-motion animation in places, but real life actors in others. The main prop used is cardboard, which some of the sets are made entirely out of, and this gives the film a more abstract and clinical, yet dirty feel. This also in my eyes represents the song in an equal manner, so I thought if we try to recreate the style used in the film in our music video, that it would work out well. I also liked the idea of having a grand-seeming idea, yet scaling it down to everyday terms, so instead of having a space jet fighter, we could replace this with a cardboard box, much like a child would make. The song is all about aspirations, and this is exactly what the box would represent since many children make cars/planes/boats out of cardboard boxes in the hope of one day having the real thing. There is a point in the song where the voice turns into two tones, as if two people are singing, so this could represent Andrew speaking into his headset in his helmet?
