The idea of a music video is to promote a single or a band or both. These are mainly found on music television channels, and so I have researched a specific music channel to illustrate where would be best to target our music video.
MTV
One music channel that I have chosen to research is MTV, or Music Television. As the name suggests, the original purpose of the New York based channel was to show music videos, targetting mainly young adults and adolescents. Nowadays, MTV broadcasts many reality TV shows, and pop and youth culture programmes. MTV is known for its countless sister channels and partners and affiliates, some including big names in the industry like VH1, Nickelodeon and Paramount. The UK ones include:
MTV One - More focused on programming and less on the music, which it has left for the spin off channels. Shows reality programming and youth entertainent. Shows include Dirty Sanchez, Pimp My Ride UK, Cribs and Happy Tree Friends.
MTV Two - This is a 24-hour music channel that broadcasts to most of Europe. It plays primarily Alternative rock - from rock to punk to indie to metal.
MTV Hits - This channel is also a 24-hour music channel, but plays chart hits nonstop, instead of narrowcasting to one genre. It replaced MTV Extra, and actual MTV shows shown on this channel are limited.
MTV Base - This is a music channel dedicated to rap, hip-hop and R&B tracks, and anything from the urban genres. It also plays shows that might share a target audience with this kind of music, such as Pimp My Ride .
MTV Dance - The channel is MTV UK's dedicated dance music channel with music videos and programming of underground and mainstream dance tracks.
This will greatly help us market our music video correctly, as well as giving a good overview into how MTV and the music channel industry works.
